Hi,
I'm scratching my head as to why my T1 is idling nicely one minute and the next, it runs like a dog. I'm slowly working through the usual timing, fuel mix, distributor and carb setup. I've changed the fuel filter, distributor cap, leads, spark plugs, condensor, rotor head and even bought another carb from teebay. Before I decide to change the distributor or carb for a new one, I suddenly thought that maybe the wrong carb is fitted! First of all, is this possible? and how would I find out which carb should be fitted to a 1973 1300cc T1 Beetle's engine?

any assistance greatly appreciated

yip good choice of carb.But tell me when you first start the car and when it comes of the choke is that when you have problems? 1 possibility is ice on the inlet manifold which is the part which the carb is bolted onto. Cure for this is to have the carb cleaned and serviced, you could also fit an imdu unit which acts like an electric blanket.

Thanks for the welcome. I was sorry to not have made it to the first meet of the month but hopefully next month we can come along and see the faces to the names....

Anyway, the carb fitted is a 31 pict 4 and the engine number stamped is B 5556 AB 492228. I've found a site that lists the codes but I can't seem to make it show as a 1300cc engine! Therefore how do I make sure its the right carb thats fitted...

Good point about the ice even though the car is in a comfy garage. I did notice that during the nice sunny days we have had that there is moisture present on the inlet manifold pipes which does start to clear as more heat is produced. So not ice then? Nice idea about the heater. I'll look into that as I haven't noticed this product on any site as yet therefore no curiosity was made.

I've been trawling through more of the past messages and came across seom suggestions that your better off with a vacuum advance type Distributor instead of the 009 (which I have fitted). Could it be that my carb is okay and suitable for the 1300 engine and it's really the distributor type that giving me the headache?

A 34 carb is for a 1600. Your 31 pict 4 sounds correct for your engine. (A 34 will not fit your manifold.) I would not worry about condensation on the outside of the manifold and certainly I would not be wasting my cash on a heater (IMDU) Also personally I dislike 009`s especially on stock motors. Yours should have a "205" distributor.

If I were doing it I would start from the start in this order assuming there is no mechanical defects in engine. Skip the bits you have already replaced.

1. Valve clearances
2. Plugs
3. Points/condenser/leads/cap/rotor arm
4. Check vacuum and mechanical advance functions on dizzy
5. Set ignition timing static
6. Strip/clean/inspect carb and re-assemble
7. Set ignition timing (engine running)
8. Set mixture/idle on carb.

I've suspected the distributor as the carb appears to operate okay. So by changing the distributor, I may resolve or at least help my problem. I take it that the 205 is the vacuum type? Where does the vacuum pipe go on the carb? Any naughty pics appreciated!

I've taken care of all points from 1 to 8 except number 4.

yeah 205 is a vacuum type. as you look into the engine bay on the left of the carb half way up is the port [near mixture screw(s)]. 

You can see the hose on this one.

Absolutely superb. I have a bit of pipe with a screw in the end so I can remove this and put the vacuum pipe in place. I did a bit of searching about and by sheer fluke I found someone on teebay who couldn't spell distributor which meant I got it cheaper. It was the Bosch branded one and recently bought from JK. £60 Result! So hopefully it'll be here soon and well see what happens then.
Any pointers or tips with the setup of the vacuum type?

At long last the tbayed distributor arrived and after buying a nice piece of rubber pipe for the vacuum hose, I'm itching to install to see the miracle difference I'm expecting......

So here we are today and out comes the old 009 distributor. Marked all the parts and lined up the TDC on number 1. Check the book and the rotor arm should be pointing towards me.

So WTF with the new distributor! I try first all to lay both the old and new beside each other and the new rotor arm is 90 degrees out.... So lets go down the route of making the cylinders match up to the new position. Every HT lead needs to be moved anti-clockwise by one to make everything match up.

So start the car and it runs like a dog. Messing about the the timing and and I don't think I can get it to advance enough because the vacuum part is fowling on the heat pipes! This can't be right...

The distributor number is 231 170 034. I google it and it says its suitable. Even JK has a picture shot of the 205 Bosch which starts with the number 231 (just visible).

Have I been duped into buying a vacuum distributor that is 'allegedly' suitable but I should have just bitten the bullet and bought one from a dealer? Doh!

yours is classed as an "034" unfortunately it sounds like you may have bought the wrong thing. You will need to find tdc on compression stroke of no 1 cylinder. The notch on your distributor below the cap and rotor arm should point at cylinder 1. This is where the no1 lead should be also 

If this is not lining up your distributor drive gear may have been installed incorrectly. It`s a fairly easy fix. 

 Also lots of older stock dizzys are not indexed exactly 90degrees between each cylinder (no3 is retarded 2degrees (4crank degrees) so moving the leads round could knock the timing of 3 cylinders out by 4 degrees.

Some very good articles now bookmarked for future reference. What was the 034 for? Doesn't make sense as various websites are advertising it as being suitable for a type 1 including my 73 model..

Every picture that I see shows the vacuum part of the distributor facing you and mine isn't. I nipped out to the car and the notch to show number 1 is where the rotor points when tdc for number 1, is in the correct place. But the distributor is not correctly positioned.

I need to set the points better as I put down my feeler gauges and was relying on visual and previous owner having them set okay. Once I've done this it will prove that it the wrong distributor.

Its kinda what I was thinking when I didn't see the 205 number.

Is it a vacuum and mechanical advance dizzy? If you hold the rotor arm and the bottom do they twist in opposite directions and spring back?

Hey just looked up a 034. I thing that is a reproduction model of a late dizzy. You should get away with that on your car. If you need some help with setting it up  give me a shout. I will be up north all week but will be back for the weekend

I've nipped under the bonnet this morning before work and had a quick check with the dizzy in place. There is a bit of a spring but nothing much. I'll check for definite later when I have more time to remove it.
 
I'd love to take up your offer of some help as I think I'm getting to the point where I'm running out of patience and enthusiasm. If your free for an hour or two this weekend, that would be great. I'll make sure the rolls and sausage are on.

I've taken the dizzy out and there's very little spring between the bottom and the rotor arm. I've also checked where the oil is supposed to enter the dizzy and it doesn't line up with the hole in the casting's hole if you know what I mean. This doesn't look good and it might be best to bite the bullet and look for a spare 'cash to spend' on a credit card to get this resolved.......

I started to check out some websites that sell the vacuum distributors. Before I buy, lets get them to confirm the number stamped on the side of the Bosch distributor....

Turns out that although they let you know its a 205, the number is 231 170 034! Which is the one I've got. So just as well I didn't just go ahead and spend £100+ on a new distributor.

So why can't I get the 205? No idea as yet.

Thanks Steve for the visit and then my subsequent visit to you! This 034 is a pain in the ****. So I'll look for a 205. Problem is that only 1 supplier has managed to come back and state they have a 205 number stamped on the side.

Justaircooled have 205
Machine7 have 034
Coolairvw were away at Volksworld
Vwheritage havent replied
JustKampers have 034

Any other suggestions for companies would be greatly appreciated.

I thought I'd better update this thread seeing as how I've got to the end and a good ending it is!

After chatting with Stevemeister who's been a great help, I stuck with the 034 vacuum distributor. I went back to basics and set everything up including the carb and the beetle is very very nearly the way I want it.

The only issue with the 034 was with the oil hole being offset. So after being happy with the distributor, I drilled a hole where it should be and even managed the groove as well.

I'm still tweaking the carb though as I don't feel it's giving the right mix when you put the car under load. Any suggestions always welcome.........
